Course Overview
Explore part of the vast, complex world of Mexican art and cultural traditions! Course topics range from cultural celebrations to architecture and modern folk art. We’ll participate in creative projects and stimulating discussions designed to connect us to ancient and modern Mexican art as we collaborate with one another. Resources for further multidisciplinary study will encourage independent learning beyond the scope of our 6-week introduction. Bring your curiosity, openness, and willingness to share and listen.
Week 1: Alebrijes - Mexican folk art
Week 2: Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes)
Week 3: Maya Codices - writing systems and visual storytelling
Week 4: Mexican Mural Art - then and now
Week 5: Sacred Mayan Architecture - Izamal, Uxmal and Chichen Itza
Week 6: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Student Outcomes:
- Gain appreciation for unique cultural traditions other than their own
- Make connections to their own experiences and values, and to one another
- Collaborate with peers on creative projects in response to course topics
