Course Overview
Explore part of the vast, complex world of Mexican art and cultural traditions! Course topics range from cultural celebrations to architecture and modern folk art. We’ll participate in creative projects and stimulating discussions designed to connect us to ancient and modern Mexican art as we collaborate with one another. Resources for further multidisciplinary study will encourage independent learning beyond the scope of our 6-week introduction. Bring your curiosity, openness, and willingness to share and listen.
Week 1: Alebrijes - Mexican folk art
Week 2: Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes)
Week 3: Maya Codices - writing systems and visual storytelling
Week 4: Mexican Mural Art - then and now
Week 5: Sacred Mayan Architecture - Izamal, Uxmal and Chichen Itza
Week 6: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Student Outcomes:

Your Teacher: Julietta Bekker
Julietta Bekker was the founding Upper School Spanish teacher at the Nueva School in San Mateo, California. While at Nueva, she designed curricula and programs, led student trips to Peru, facilitated an international cultural exchange program, and taught and advised gifted students. She has taught all levels of middle and high school Spanish for over a decade, incorporating cultural studies and design thinking. Julietta received her master’s in Spanish from Middlebury College, with most of her graduate coursework completed while she lived in Madrid, Spain. She currently works as a private Spanish tutor and illustrator in Portland, Oregon.
