Course Overview

What do Florence Joyner, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, cheetahs, caracals, and flying squirrels, have in common? They’re all super athletes! In this course we’ll dive into different human athletes, and the animals that compete or outshine them. We’ll utilize mathematics to learn about speed, distance, statistics, and how to compare data between animals and human athletes. Each week we’ll learn about a new record holder, explore different sports, compare animals, statistics, and physiology. Join us while we explore fast swimmers, high jumpers, strength, and utilize data to compare human record breakers with animal counterparts!

Student Outcomes:

  • Develop a mathematical understanding of basic statistics and physics principles, and utilize data to make comparing and contrasting statements
  • Explore human record holders in various sports
  • Compare and contrast human and animal physiology to identify what makes humans and animals excel at different sports
