Course Overview
Poetry, an art itself, requires the same attention, creativity, and emotion that creating a piece of visual art does. In this course, students will hone their skills on how to interpret art and talk about art pieces as they simultaneously take their interpretations of art and learn how to craft them into poetry. The form of poetry we will be writing in will be Ekphrastic poetry, which harkens back to ancient Greece. Students will learn foundations of metaphor and imagery, among other literary devices, and practice applying them in their Ekphrastic poetry in order to create beautiful pieces of art with their words. No former background in writing poetry is required!
Student Outcomes:
- Interpret artwork and poetry with an open, critical, and curious mind
- Learn and practice using abstract language in poetry
- Practice receiving feedback on writing and inserting it into your work
