Course Overview

For some students, writing can feel arduous. Getting ideas on paper can be much more challenging than sharing ideas verbally, and the act of writing becomes much more of a prescribed chore than a creative, fun outlet. In this class, we are going to try to change that!

We are going to explore authors who utilize writing and language in a witty and unusual way, invoking both humor and social commentary in their work. By analyzing the structure and formula of different pieces, we will change the typical approach to the writing process. Whether you are a student who loves creative writing or approaches writing with hesitation, this class will bring a new appreciation for language as form of communication that can be FUN!

Student Outcomes:

  • Explore the etymology of unusual words, as well as authors who have created their own words in their writing
  • Examine the structure of short stories like "Fortunately," and apply the structure a unique writing piece
  • Compare and contrast different types of "witty" poetry both in content and structure
  • Exercise a growth mindset rooted in our beliefs about our own writing abilities and how process can support our varied learning styles
