Humanities encompasses many different subjects which speaks to the power of the subject itself. In that, it encourages multi-disciplinary approaches to understanding a topic. We will continue to update this page with resources related to the study of “human culture.”

Art Resources

Tate Kids

Museums are treasure troves of information for students. One of our favorite art resources is hosted by the Tate Modern in the UK. It is a fantastic website that includes games, activities, and provides engaging ways for students to interact, to learn about, and to create art. As a teacher, I have definitely used this website a lot!

Language Study Resources

  1. Etymology Online

Words tell stories, and this website aims to tell the story of English words traveling back in time to when historians think that word was in use, some 500 years, some more than 2000 years ago. Etymologies do not provide the definition of the word, but the stories help us understood what a specific word meant at certain time in history and can help us track how we got the English word that we use today. Below is a recent search following a student curiosity conducted in a Cresconova class!

Oxford English Dictionary

If there was one dictionary for us to recommend for you to use in tandem with etymology online, the Oxford English Dictionary is the best in our opinion!

Philosophy Resources

  1. Wonderopolis

Wonderopolis is an easy website for students to explore. Each day it features a different “wonder,” and a brief video or comprehensive answer to the question of the day. It encourages students to continue to wonder and to share their curiosities with others.

Philosophy 4 Children

Philosophy 4 Children (P4C) has a number of free resources that provide a helpful guide for parents and teachers as they work with our youngest, and at times, wisest philosophers of society, children.

Poetry Resources

The Poetry Foundation

Poetry is often a great way to get emerging writers to feel comfortable sharing their emotions and thoughts on paper. This website is helpful for not only teachers and parents, but provides a safe place for students to read poems cultivated just for them. It also includes a helpful glossary of literary terms as students begin to growth their poetry toolbox.
